If you’ve decided that a perforated roller shutter is the right choice for your premises, the next question is which perforation pattern to go for and it’s a more important decision than most people initially realise. The pattern affects everything from how much light comes through and how well the space ventilates, to how secure the shutter is and how it looks on the building. A perforation pattern refers to the arrangement, size, shape and density of the holes punched into the steel slats of a perforated steel shutter. These variables aren’t just aesthetic choices. They determine the functional performance of the shutter across several key areas: visibility, airflow, light transmission and resistance to forced entry.
Two shutters can look broadly similar from a distance but perform very differently depending on how their perforations are specified. A shutter with large, closely spaced holes will let in significantly more light and air than one with small, widely spaced holes, but it’ll also offer less structural resistance.

Before looking at specific applications, it helps to understand the four main variables that define a perforation pattern and what each one controls.
Each of these variables interacts with the others, which is why choosing a perforation pattern isn’t simply a case of picking a size and moving on. It’s about finding the right combination that serves your specific priorities.
The open area percentage is the single most useful number when specifying a perforated roller shutter. It tells you what proportion of the shutter face is open and from that you can infer how the shutter will perform across all the things that matter.
A low open area percentage, typically somewhere between 15 and 25 percent, means most of the slat is solid steel. This gives you better structural resistance and reduced visibility from the outside, but less airflow and natural light.
A higher open area percentage, in the range of 40 to 50 percent or above, gives you much better ventilation and light transmission but at the cost of some structural rigidity and a greater degree of visibility into the space behind the shutter.
Most standard commercial perforated shutters sit somewhere in the middle of that range, which works well for most general commercial applications. It’s when your priorities sit at either end of the scale, heavily weighted towards security on one side or maximum ventilation and visibility on the other, that getting the specification right becomes more important.
Small holes, even at a relatively high open area percentage, diffuse light more evenly and create a more uniform appearance from the outside. They also tend to accumulate dirt and debris more easily, particularly in environments where dust or grime is present, which is worth factoring into your maintenance planning. The shape of the holes is where aesthetics and function start to overlap. Round perforations are the most common choice for commercial and industrial applications because they’re structurally efficient, easy to clean and suit a wide range of building styles without drawing too much attention to themselves.
Slotted or elongated perforations create a more directional visual effect and can give a shutter a more contemporary or architectural appearance. They also tend to allow slightly more directional airflow, which suits certain ventilation setups well. If the look of the shutter matters to you, whether that’s a retail unit, a leisure facility or a building with a strong visual identity, it’s worth bringing the perforation shape into the conversation early.

Perforated shutters use solid slats with holes punched into them, creating a clean, continuous face with a defined pattern of openings. Punched lath shutters use a different slat profile where the lath itself has a more open, bar-like construction rather than a solid face with holes punched through it.


The visual result is noticeably different. Punched lath shutters tend to give a higher degree of visibility and a lighter, more open appearance, while perforated shutters look more solid and uniform from a distance. Standard perforation patterns cover most applications well, but there are situations where a bespoke pattern is worth considering. This might be because the building has specific architectural requirements, because the business wants to incorporate a design element into the shutter or because the application has performance requirements that standard patterns don’t quite meet.

The pattern you choose does have some bearing on how straightforward the shutter is to keep clean and maintain over time. Smaller, more densely packed perforations accumulate dirt more easily than larger, more open patterns, particularly in environments with dust, exhaust fumes or airborne particles.
Larger perforations are generally easier to clean and less prone to blockage, but they do allow more material to pass through in both directions, which can affect what ends up on the interior side of the shutter in certain environments.
