Do Window Security Bars Obstruct the View from Inside or Outside the Building?

If you are considering window security bars for your home or business, one of the most common questions is whether they will significantly affect your view. It depends on the type of bar system you choose and modern solutions have come a very long way in addressing this.

This guide explains how different types of window security bars affect visibility and what options are available to minimise any impact on your outlook. It will also help you choose the right solution for your property.

Do Window Security Bars Affect the View?

Traditional fixed metal bars for windows do create some degree of visual obstruction. Each individual bar takes up space across the window opening and when several are installed across the full width or height, a grid-like pattern is visible both from inside and outside the property. For some locations, particularly ground-floor commercial premises or industrial sites, this is an acceptable trade-off for the level of security provided.

However, the degree of obstruction varies considerably depending on bar spacing, bar width and whether the bars are fixed in place or retractable. In many cases, the visual impact is far less significant than people anticipate, particularly when bars are powder coated in white or matched to the window frame colour.

Fixed Window Bars vs Retractable Window Bars

When it comes to view and aesthetics, the type of bar system you choose makes a significant difference. Here is how the two main options compare.

Fixed Window Security Bars

Fixed window security bars are permanently secured to the window frame or surrounding wall, either internally or externally, and remain in place at all times. Viewed from outside, they provide a clear visual deterrent. Viewed from inside, the bars run across the window opening but do not block the glass itself. Natural light still passes through freely and the view is still visible between the bars.

Fixed bars are best suited to locations where there is no need to remove them at any point. These include storage areas, utility rooms, rear-facing windows and commercial or industrial premises where aesthetics are less of a priority than robust, permanent protection. For these applications, any minor visual interruption is generally considered a worthwhile compromise.

Retractable Window Security Bars

Retractable interior window security bars offer a significant advantage when the view matters. Systems such as the award-winning Seceuroshield, which Excel Roller Shutters installs across Yorkshire. They feature anti-cut steel bars that lock securely into position when required, but can be released from the inside in seconds to allow completely unobstructed vision. When the bars are retracted, the window looks entirely normal and the outlook is completely clear.

This makes retractable internal window bars an excellent choice for offices, retail environments, domestic properties and any location where people want the reassurance of strong security without permanently altering the appearance of the window. During business hours or daytime at home, the bars can be removed for a clear, open feel. At night or when the premises are unoccupied, they lock back into place to secure the window.

Does it Make a Difference Whether Bars are Fitted Internally or Externally?

Yes, the fitting position affects both security performance and visual impact.

Externally fitted bars are visible from the outside of the building at all times and can give a more industrial appearance to the exterior. The fixing brackets are accessible from outside, making them more vulnerable to attack with portable power tools. For commercial premises where appearance is less critical, external bars can still be an effective solution.

Internally fitted bars sit within the window recess on the inside of the property. From the exterior, the fixings cannot be seen or accessed, making them a more secure option as any intruder must first breach the window itself before being able to attack the bars. From the inside, the bars are visible but, because they sit close to the window frame, they have a much tidier and less obtrusive appearance than external bars.

Internally mounted systems, including the Seceuroshield retractable option, are widely regarded as the more secure and more discreet of the two approaches.

How Much Natural Light do Window Security Bars Block?

A well-designed bar system blocks very little natural light. The bars occupy only a small fraction of the total window area and the glass itself remains fully exposed between each bar. Provided the spacing between bars is appropriate for the security level required, light transmission through the window is barely reduced.

In most properties, occupants notice very little change in the amount of daylight entering the room once window bars are installed.

Will Window Bars Change how the Property Looks from the Outside?

Bar width, colour and positioning all play a part in how noticeable window security bars are from the outside. Bars that are powder coated in white or matched to the window frame colour blend far more naturally into the appearance of a building than untreated steel or black-painted bars.

Internally fitted bars are generally less obvious from the street than external bars, as they sit behind the glass.

It is also worth bearing in mind that visible security measures act as a deterrent. A property with clearly visible window bars is often a less attractive target for opportunist burglars than an unprotected building, which is itself a practical benefit of the external appearance.

Window Bars and Access for Maintenance and Cleaning

One of the practical advantages of retractable interior window security bars is that they can be released whenever access to the window is needed, whether that is for cleaning, maintenance or simply to open the window fully.

With the Seceuroshield system, bars can be removed individually or entirely using a single radial lock, making routine window maintenance straightforward. When the bars are back in position, they lock securely to restore full protection.

Which Type of Window Security Bar is Right for Your Property?

Choosing between fixed and retractable internal window bars largely comes down to your priorities.

If view and flexibility matter then retractable interior window bars, such as the Seceuroshield system, are the ideal choice. They provide the same high level of protection as fixed bars when locked in place, but can be removed in seconds when you want a completely unobstructed window.

If permanent protection is the priority then fixed window bars are a robust, low-maintenance option. They are particularly well suited to commercial, industrial or storage premises where the window is not a primary source of light or outlook and where removal is never required.

If you have multiple window types then it is possible to combine both systems across a single property. A business might specify retractable bars on customer-facing windows where appearance matters and fixed bars on rear or side windows where security is the sole consideration.
