High-speed roller shutters can be used both inside and outside a building, but the requirements for each environment are quite different. Choosing the right specification is key to getting the performance and longevity you need.
High-speed roller shutters work on the same principle as standard roller shutters, but with motors and mechanisms built for rapid, high-frequency operation.
Unlike standard shutters, which use aluminium slats, high-speed doors generally use a lightweight aluminium curtain. This allows the door to travel at speed without putting excessive strain on the motor or mechanism. Where a conventional shutter might take 30 to 60 seconds to open or close, a high-speed door can complete the same cycle in a matter of seconds.
This speed reduces energy loss, supports workflow and limits the window of opportunity for unauthorised access, all of which matter whether the door is inside your building or on its exterior.
For internal openings, high-speed shutters are typically chosen where there is a need to separate two environments within the same building. This might be a temperature-controlled storage area adjoining a general production floor, a clean zone within a manufacturing facility, or a dispatch area separated from a main warehouse. In each case, the value of the high-speed door comes from how quickly it seals the opening after each pass, minimising the mixing of air between the two spaces.
Indoor installations tend to be more straightforward from a specification point of view. The door is sheltered from wind and weather, so the primary considerations are:
External openings are a different proposition. A high-speed shutter fitted on a loading bay, a service yard entrance or an external vehicle access point is exposed to wind, rain and temperature variation in a way that an internal door is not. A product designed purely for indoor use may not perform reliably in these conditions.

For most commercial and industrial premises, external high-speed shutters are most commonly found on loading bay openings and vehicle access points. These are areas where the door is in near-constant use and where maintaining the building’s thermal efficiency has a direct impact on energy costs.
In practice, many industrial buildings require both. A food production facility might have external high-speed doors on its loading bays and internal high-speed doors separating its production and storage areas. A distribution centre might use outdoor doors on the loading bays and indoor doors to divide temperature zones within the warehouse itself. The two specifications serve different purposes and it is not a case of one replacing the other.
