This October marks the 6th annual Home Security Month, and campaigns are being launched nationwide to improve homeowner’s awareness when reducing the likelihood of being a victim of burglary. Much of the advice given to homeowners, however, can also be applied to commercial or industrial properties, as these can also be a target of vandalism, theft and fraudulent activity.
Each week of National Home Security month centres on a different theme. Below are the campaigns and how you can use the advice to maximise the protection of your commercial or industrial premises.
1st – 7th October – Raise the Alarm:
This week, the main point of focus is alarms. Many business owners throughout Yorkshire may have outdated alarm systems. Whilst the presence of an alarm can act as a deterrent to criminals, a working alarm is proven to deter thieves during the act.
8th – 14th October – Setting the Standard:
The second week will focus on the standard of security that all properties should have. From window and door locks, to keeping valuables out of sight. A good way of commercial properties keeping valuables out of sight is through the installation of solid roller shutters: these can provide a physical barrier preventing access, and vision into the property.
15th October – 21st October – Lights Camera, Action:
Week three appreciates the burden that darker evenings have on maintaining the security of your property. This time of year tends to cause a spike in reported burglaries, due to the dark nights making it easier for criminals to lurk in the shadows. The advice given by Security Month suggests investing in exterior lighting and CCTV to bolster the protection around your property.
23rd October – 28th October – Future Focused:
The penultimate week of Home Security Month takes a look at the future of security by looking at smart door locking systems and how this could transform the entry into homes. This will explore the possibility of using our smartphones and other smart devices to remotely lock our properties. If successful with domestic security, could this be an opportunity that warehouse and shop owners in Yorkshire could benefit from?
29th October – 4th November – Dark Nights Descend:
The final week sees the dark nights fully descend upon us. Halloween and Bonfire night represent a peak time for burglaries on the lead up to Christmas. Commercial buildings such as community centres, high street retailers, and industrial warehouses are not exempt to burglaries around this time of year either. Many businesses have increased levels of stock, to keep up with the demand for Christmas deliveries, and therefore can become a target for criminals.
